Method
Sandwich
Prepare ingredients
Gather all ingredients. Wash and pat dry the tomato and lettuce. Slice the tomato into 3 even slices if not pre-sliced. Measure out butter, mayonnaise, and mustard.
Season tomato
Place the tomato slices on a small plate. Sprinkle the salt and black pepper evenly over the tomato slices and set aside so they start to release a bit of juice and flavor.
Assemble condiments
On the non-buttered side of one bread slice, spread the mayonnaise. On the non-buttered side of the other slice, spread the Dijon mustard. This gives balanced flavor on both sides.
Layer sandwich
On the mayonnaise-spread slice, lay down the lettuce leaf first (this helps protect bread from tomato moisture). Place the seasoned tomato slices on top of the lettuce. Add the deli turkey slices evenly over the tomato, then place the cheddar slice on top of the turkey.
Finish and serve
Top with the mustard-spread bread slice, buttered side outward. If you prefer the cheese warm and slightly melted, return the assembled sandwich to the skillet, press down gently with a spatula, and cook over low heat for 1–2 minutes per side until the cheese softens. Remove, cut diagonally if desired, and serve immediately.
Notes
Adjust quantities to taste: add more turkey or cheese for a larger sandwich, or swap condiments. Use whole-grain or other breads as preferred. Refrigerate leftover sandwich components separately; assembled sandwich is best eaten fresh.
