Base (dairy & mayo)
Herbs & aromatics
Seasoning & acid
Optional finishing & garnish
Method
Prep
Chop herbs and aromatics
Wash and thoroughly dry the fresh herbs. Finely chop the parsley, dill, and chives so they measure about 2 tablespoons each. Mince the garlic cloves finely. Remove the stem and seeds from the jalapeños for milder heat, then finely mince the peppers. Reserve one jalapeño slice for garnish if desired.
Measure out the sour cream, mayonnaise, and buttermilk, and have the seasonings ready.
Mixing & seasoning
Combine base ingredients
In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together 1 cup sour cream and 1 cup mayonnaise until smooth and homogenous. Gradually whisk in 1/2 cup buttermilk until the texture reaches a pourable but still creamy consistency. Adjust more buttermilk by tablespoon if you want thinner dressing.
Season and acid balance
Add 1 teaspoon kosher salt, 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, and 1/4 teaspoon dried dill (if using). Stir in 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar. Taste and adjust: add more salt, pepper, or lemon juice to brightness as needed.
Resting & serving
Before serving, stir the ranch and check consistency. If too thick for a dressing, whisk in additional buttermilk 1 tablespoon at a time until desired pourable thickness is reached. For a thicker dip, omit extra buttermilk.
Transfer to a serving bowl, garnish with reserved jalapeño slice(s) and an optional drizzle of 1/2 teaspoon olive oil. Serve chilled with crudités, wings, tacos, salads, or as a sandwich spread.
