Cocktail Base

Method

Cocktail Base

1

Measure and Combine

Add 2 oz bourbon, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 0.5 oz amaro, 0.25 oz coffee liqueur and 0.25 oz brown sugar simple syrup into a mixing glass.

2

Add Bitters

Add 2 dashes chocolate bitters and 1 dash orange bitters to the mixing glass.

3

Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice (enough to chill but allow dilution control). Stir briskly with a bar spoon for 30–45 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (about 20–25% chill/dilution for a spirit-forward cocktail) — the mixture should look satin-smooth and frosted on the outside of the glass.

Finish & Garnish

4

Prepare Glass

Place one large ice cube into an old-fashioned (rocks) glass.

5

Strain

Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the stirred cocktail over the large ice cube in the prepared glass.

6

Express & Garnish

Take the orange peel and pinch it skin-side down over the glass to express the oils across the top of the drink, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the cocktail. Skewer or drop in a Luxardo cherry as a final garnish.

7

Serve immediately and enjoy responsibly. The combination of bourbon, sweet vermouth and amaro with coffee and chocolate notes gives a bitter-sweet, decadent profile — hence the name 'Unhealthy Marriage.'
