Method
Cocktail
Prepare espresso
Brew a shot (about 1 oz) of espresso or make 1 oz of very strong coffee. Allow it to cool slightly (about 1–2 minutes) so it's hot but not scalding; room-temperature is fine. Freshly made and still slightly warm works best for crema.
Chill glass
Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill.
Assemble and shake
Add 1 cup of ice to a cocktail shaker. Pour in 2 oz vodka, 1 oz cooled espresso, 1 oz coffee liqueur, and 0.5 oz simple syrup. Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 15–25 seconds. The vigorous shake is needed to chill the mixture and create a frothy crema on top from the espresso.
Strain and serve
Dump the ice or remove the glass from the freezer. Double-strain the shaken cocktail into the chilled martini/coupe glass using the shaker's strainer and a fine mesh strainer (or the shaker only if you don't have a fine strainer) to achieve a smooth texture and a good foam layer.
Garnish
Place 3 coffee beans gently on the foam in the center of the drink as a classic garnish. Serve immediately.
