Cocktail Base
Chill glass
Place a rocks glass or coupe in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker, add 2 oz Fernet-Branca, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and 0.5 oz fresh espresso or cold-brew concentrate (if using). If you prefer the classic neat or on-the-rocks Fernet, omit the espresso and syrup or adjust syrup to taste.
Add ice and stir
Add plenty of ice to the mixing glass. Stir for 20–30 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted (if using a shaker and espresso, you may shake briefly for 6–8 seconds to integrate and slightly aerate).
Prepare serving glass
Dump the ice water from the chilled serving glass (if used). Add fresh large ice cube(s) if serving on the rocks, or leave the glass dry if serving neat.
Strain and serve
Strain the stirred or shaken mixture into the prepared glass. If serving neat, use a fine strainer to catch any small particles from the espresso.
Garnish
Express the orange peel over the drink by holding it skin-side down above the glass and giving it a firm twist to release the oils. Rub the peel around the rim if desired, then drop it into the drink.
Optionally, top or serve alongside a thin piece of dark chocolate or a few chocolate shavings to complement the bitter, herbal profile for a sweets pairing.
