Method
Preparation
Rinse the Cranberries
Place the fresh cranberries in a colander and rinse them thoroughly under cold running water. Discard any that are mushy or damaged.
Combine Ingredients
In a large saucepan, combine the rinsed cranberries, granulated sugar, water, orange zest, and the cinnamon stick.
Cooking
Cook the Mixture
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves.
Simmer the Sauce
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and allow the sauce to simmer for 10-15 minutes. The cranberries will begin to burst and the sauce will thicken.
Taste and Adjust
Taste the sauce during simmering. If desired, add lemon juice for extra tartness, and stir in walnuts or raisins for added texture.
Cooling and Serving
Cool the Sauce
Remove the saucepan from heat and let the cranberry sauce cool to room temperature. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
Store or Serve
Transfer the sauce to a serving bowl or airtight container. If serving immediately, enjoy as a side dish with your favorite holiday meals. If storing, refrigerate for up to two weeks.
