Batter for Fried Green Tomatoes
Oil for Frying
Method
Preparation of Fried Green Tomatoes
- 1
Prepare the Tomatoes
Slice the green tomatoes into 1/2 inch thick slices and set aside.
- 2
Make the Batter
In a bowl, combine cornmeal, all-purpose flour, buttermilk, egg, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Whisk until smooth.
Frying the Tomatoes
- 3
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 4
Dip and Fry
Dip each slice of tomato into the batter, allowing the excess to drip off. Carefully place each slice in the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- 5
Drain the Tomatoes
Remove the fried tomatoes from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Assembling the Dish
- 6
Cook the Bacon
In a separate pan, cook the bacon until crispy. Drain on paper towels.
- 7
Build the Stack
On a serving plate, layer a slice of fried green tomato, a slice of pepper jack cheese, a slice of bacon, and drizzle with Carolina BBQ sauce. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
- 8
Serve
Serve immediately while hot, with additional BBQ sauce on the side if desired.
