Prepare ice
If using crushed ice, crush or chip ice until it is fine. Otherwise use 3 ice cubes in addition to crushed ice to keep the drink cold and slightly diluted.
- 3
Measure and combine
Fill the chilled mug about halfway with crushed ice (about 1 cup). Measure 2 oz vodka with a jigger and pour over the ice. Add 0.5 oz fresh lime juice (about half a lime) to the mug.
- 4
Top with ginger beer
Slowly pour 4 oz chilled ginger beer over the back of a bar spoon (or directly) into the mug to preserve carbonation. Give the drink one gentle stir with the bar spoon — 2–3 turns — to combine without flattening the ginger beer.
- 5
Adjust and serve
Taste and adjust: if you prefer more acidity, add another 0.25 oz lime juice; for more bite, add a splash more ginger beer. Add 3 ice cubes on top if desired to keep the drink cold.
Garnish
- 6
Garnish the drink with a lime wedge or wheel on the rim. Optionally thread a thin slice of candied or fresh ginger onto a cocktail pick and rest it across the mug, and tuck a mint sprig beside it for aroma.
Serve & Tips
- 7
Serve immediately while very cold. Recommend copper mug to maintain temperature. For a non-alcoholic version, replace vodka with additional ginger beer or a non-alcoholic spirit and keep the same proportions.
