Espresso

Method

Espresso

1

Prepare Machine and Beans

Preheat your espresso machine and portafilter by running a blank shot or flushing with hot water. Weigh 18 g of fresh espresso beans and grind to a medium-fine setting suitable for espresso (should feel slightly gritty between fingers).

2

Tamp and Brew

Dose the 18 g ground coffee into the portafilter, distribute evenly and tamp with consistent pressure to create a level puck. Lock the portafilter into the group head and pull an espresso shot aiming for about 40 ml of liquid in 25–30 seconds. Start timing when you begin the extraction.

Hot Water

3

Heat Water

While the espresso is being prepared, heat 120 ml of filtered water to just off boiling (90–96°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let rest 30 seconds.

4

Combine Espresso and Water

Pour the 120 ml of hot water into a pre-warmed 8–10 oz (240–300 ml) cup. Gently pour the 40 ml espresso over the hot water (the traditional method is hot water first, espresso second to preserve crema). Stir once gently if desired to integrate.

Optional Add-ins

5

If you prefer a milk-based or sweeter Americano, add up to 30 ml warmed or steamed milk and/or 5 g sweetener to taste. Stir gently to combine. Taste and adjust: add more hot water for a milder cup, or more espresso (repeat extraction) for a stronger cup.

Serve

6

Serve immediately while hot. Offer milk and sweetener on the side for guests. Clean the portafilter and steam wand (if used).
