Rinse the red currants and black cherries thoroughly under cold water. Remove the stems from the red currants and pit the black cherries if not already done.

Prepare the Fruits

In a mixing bowl, combine the red currants and black cherries. Sprinkle the granulated sugar over the fruits and toss gently to coat. Let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes to allow the juices to release.

Make the Fruit Mixture

In a large saucepan, add the fruit mixture, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, water, and red wine. Stir gently to combine all the ingredients.

Combine Ingredients

Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Allow it to simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the fruits are soft and the flavors meld together.

Simmer the Mixture

After simmering, taste the mixture. If desired, add sweetener to taste, stirring until completely dissolved.

Taste and Adjust

Remove the saucepan from heat and let it cool slightly. Use a fine mesh strainer to strain the mixture into a serving pitcher, pressing gently on the solids to extract maximum flavor. Serve warm or chilled.
