Method
Espresso and Chocolate Base
Brew espresso
Pull two shots (about 2 ounces total) of espresso using your espresso machine. If you don't have an espresso machine, brew 2 ounces of very strong coffee (concentrated) and use it in place of the espresso.
Make chocolate syrup
In a small heatproof cup or bowl, combine 1.5 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 tsp granulated sugar. Add 2 tbsp hot water and whisk until smooth and free of lumps to form a chocolate paste.
Melt chocolate
Stir the 1 tbsp finely chopped dark chocolate (or chocolate chips) into the chocolate paste while it's still warm until melted and fully incorporated. This deepens the chocolate flavor and adds body.
Pour the two shots of hot espresso over the chocolate mixture and stir briskly until fully combined and slightly frothy. Set aside and keep warm.
Milk and Foam
Steam and flavor milk
Pour 8 oz whole milk into a milk pitcher. Add 1 tsp vanilla extract. Steam the milk with a steam wand until it reaches about 150–155°F (65–68°C) and develops velvety microfoam. If you don't have a steam wand, gently heat the milk on the stovetop until warm (not boiling) and then froth vigorously with a handheld frother or whisk to create foam.
Tap the pitcher on the counter and swirl to integrate foam with milk for a smooth texture.
Assemble and Finish
Pour the chocolate-espresso mixture into a pre-warmed 10–12 oz mug.
Optional: Top with 2 tbsp whipped cream. Sprinkle 1 tsp cocoa powder or chocolate shavings over the top for garnish.
Serve immediately. Stir before drinking to combine chocolate settled at the bottom if desired.
