Prepare fruit and sugar
Cut the lime into 8 wedges: halve the lime, then cut each half into 4. Scoop the pulp from 2–3 ripe passion fruits into a small bowl or measuring cup (aim for about 2 tablespoons of pulp per fruit). Place the lime wedges in an old-fashioned or rocks glass. Add the granulated sugar on top of the lime wedges.
Muddle
Using a sturdy muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, gently press and twist the lime wedges and sugar together 8–10 times to release the lime juice and dissolve the sugar. Do not over-muddle the lime rinds aggressively (which can release excessive bitterness). Add the passion fruit pulp to the glass and give the mixture 4–6 gentle presses to combine pulp, lime juice, and sugar.
Add spirits and ice
Pour 2 oz cachaça over the muddled fruit mixture. Fill the glass with crushed ice until almost full (about 1 cup). If you prefer a colder, less diluted drink, use a mix of crushed ice and 3 ice cubes.
Garnish and serve
Top with an optional half passion fruit or a lime wheel on the rim. Serve with a short straw. Encourage the drinker to stir occasionally as the fruit settles.
