Sandwich Assembly
Method
Sandwich Assembly
Toast the bread
Preheat a toaster or oven. Lightly butter one side of each bread slice with about 2 tsp divided. Toast all 9 slices until golden and crisp (about 2–4 minutes in a toaster or 5–8 minutes under a broiler), then set aside, buttered side down.
Prepare tomato and lettuce
Wash and pat dry the lettuce leaves. Slice the tomato into 6 even slices (about 1/4-inch thick). Lightly season tomato slices with 1 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp black pepper; set aside.
Assemble the first layer
Place three toasted bread slices on your work surface. Spread 1 tbs mayonnaise evenly on the top of each slice. On one slice, layer 4 slices of turkey (one-third of the turkey), then 2 tomato slices, and 2 lettuce leaves. Place a second toasted slice, mayonnaise side down, on top to form the middle layer.
Assemble the second layer
On the middle slice (the top of the second piece), spread 1 tbs mayonnaise. On that slice, layer 3 slices of bacon, 4 more slices of turkey, 2 tomato slices, and 2 lettuce leaves. Spread 1 tbs mayonnaise on a final slice of toast and place it mayonnaise side down on top to finish the stack.
Finish and portion
Lightly press the assembled sandwich, then insert toothpicks through the top to secure (one near each corner; use 3–4 for a tall club). Using a sharp knife, cut the sandwich diagonally into quarters so each quarter is a triangle. Repeat assembly if making additional sandwiches using remaining ingredients.
Serve
Arrange sandwich quarters on a plate and serve immediately. Offer extra mayonnaise on the side if desired.
