Method
Garlic Butter
- 1
Soften and combine
Leave the 1/2 cup unsalted butter at room temperature for 15–30 minutes until soft but still spreadable. Alternatively, microwave in 5–8 second bursts until soft.
- 2
Mix flavorings
In a medium bowl, combine the softened butter, 4 minced garlic cloves, 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley, 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes. Stir thoroughly until uniform. Taste and adjust salt or lemon juice as desired.
Bread Preparation
- 3
Preheat oven
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Position a rack in the middle of the oven.
- 4
Slice bread
Using a serrated knife, slice the loaf in half lengthwise to create two long pieces, or slice into 1-inch thick diagonal slices if making individual pieces. If you prefer a crisper exterior, brush the cut sides lightly with 1 tablespoon olive oil.

Toasting & Finish
- 6
Bake
Place the buttered bread cut-side up on a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment. Bake in the preheated oven until the butter is melted and the edges are golden, about 10–12 minutes for halves or 8–10 minutes for slices.
- 7
Optional broil for crisp top
If you want a more browned, crisp top, switch the oven to broil on high for 1–2 minutes—watch closely to avoid burning. Remove when golden and bubbling.
- 8
Finish and serve
Remove from oven. If desired, sprinkle the extra 1 tablespoon chopped parsley and 1 tablespoon additional grated Parmesan over the top. Let rest 1–2 minutes, then slice (if you prepared halves) and serve warm.
