Syrup
Make the turbinado syrup: combine 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar and 1 tablespoon hot water in a small bowl or cup. Stir until the sugar is mostly dissolved. Let cool slightly. (Can be made ahead and refrigerated.)
Cocktail
Add the syrup, bitters, and cherry: in a rocks glass, add 1 tablespoon turbinado syrup, 3 dashes Angostura bitters, 2 dashes orange bitters, and the filthy black cherry. Muddle gently just enough to break the cherry and release a little juice and flavor — do not over-muddle into a paste.
Add bourbon and ice: Pour 2 oz Maker's Mark bourbon into the glass. Add one large ice cube (or 2–3 large cubes) to chill without over-diluting.
Finish and serve: Give the drink one more quick gentle stir to incorporate the expressed oils. Serve immediately with the cherry in the glass.
