Drink
Optional palate-cleanser
Method
Drink
Combine
Add 2 tsp Fernet-Branca, 1 tbsp Amaro (Averna or Montenegro), 1 tsp sweet vermouth, 1/4 tsp simple syrup and 2 dashes Angostura bitters into a mixing glass or sturdy jar.
Add ice
Fill the mixing glass with 4 large ice cubes to chill and dilute the mixture properly.
Stir
Stir gently for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full revolutions) until the outside of the mixing glass is very cold and the liquid is slightly diluted and silky.
Prepare glass
Place one large clear ice cube in a chilled lowball (rocks) glass.
Strain
Strain the stirred mixture over the large ice cube into the prepared glass using a Hawthorne or fine strainer to remove any small shards of ice.
Express and garnish
Take an orange peel and, with the outer skin facing the cocktail, give it a firm twist over the drink to express oils. Run the peel around the rim briefly and drop it into the glass as garnish.
Optional serve with sparkling water
If desired, serve alongside 2 oz chilled sparkling water to sip between small sips of the digestif as a palate cleanser.
