Chicken Preparation
- 1
Marinate the Chicken
In a large bowl, combine the buttermilk, salt, and black pepper. Add the chicken breasts, ensuring they are fully submerged. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.
- 2
Prepare the Breading
In a shallow dish, place 1.5 cups of all-purpose flour. Remove the chicken from the marinade, allowing excess buttermilk to drip off, and dredge each piece in the flour, pressing lightly to adhere. Set aside on a plate.
Frying Chicken
- 3
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat 2 cups of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 4
Fry the Chicken
Carefully add the breaded chicken breasts to the hot oil, cooking in batches if necessary. Fry for 5-7 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through. Remove the chicken and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Gravy Preparation
- 5
- 6
Add Liquids
Gradually whisk in the chicken broth and milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook, whisking constantly, until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
- 7
Season the Gravy
Add salt, black pepper, and garlic powder to the gravy, stirring to combine. Adjust seasoning as needed.
Serving
- 8
Plate the Dish
Serve the fried chicken hot, generously topped with the white gravy. Chop the green onions and sprinkle over the top as a garnish.
