Method
Sandwich
Mix the cream cheese
Place the cream cheese in a small bowl. Add the lemon juice, olive oil, chopped fresh dill (or parsley), and freshly ground black pepper. Mash and stir with a fork until smooth and spreadable. Taste and adjust with a tiny pinch more salt if needed (be careful if using capers).
Assemble the sandwich
Halve the baguette or roll lengthwise. If you prefer, lightly toast cut sides for 1–2 minutes until just golden. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over both cut faces (about 1.5 oz total on the sandwich). Arrange the smoked salmon slices on the bottom half in an even layer. Top the salmon with the cucumber slices (overlap slightly). Scatter capers over the cucumbers if using, then finish with a light sprinkle of sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste.
Finish and serve
Close the sandwich and press gently to compact. If desired, cut the sandwich in half on the diagonal. Serve immediately, or wrap tightly and chill up to 4 hours for later—bring to near-room temperature before eating for best texture and flavor.
