Water Source & Treatment

Method
Water Source & Treatment
- 1
Select water
Choose a clean potable water source: filtered tap water, bottled spring water, or municipal supply that meets local drinking-water standards. Measure 1 liter for this recipe.
- 2
Filter (if using tap)
If using tap water, run the water through a carbon/filter system to remove chlorine, odors, and particulates. If using a household carbon filter cartridge, follow manufacturer flow rates and filter one liter through the cartridge.
- 3
Optional charcoal polishing
For extra taste/odor improvement, steep the filtered water with 1 tablespoon activated charcoal in a clean container for 5–10 minutes, then strain or decant to remove charcoal. This step is optional and usually not necessary with good filters or bottled spring water.
Bottling & Packaging
- 4
Sanitize bottles and equipment
Prepare a sanitizing solution according to the sanitizer manufacturer's instructions (or ~50 ppm chlorine, roughly 1/2 teaspoon household bleach per liter for small-scale use). Rinse bottles, caps, funnel and any tools, then fill the bottles and tools with sanitizer and let sit for at least 1 minute. Drain and allow to air-dry or rinse with the same clean potable water if required by the sanitizer used.
- 5
Fill the bottle
Place the clean funnel into the bottle neck. Slowly pour the prepared water into the bottle, leaving about 2–3 cm (0.75–1 inch) of headspace at the top to allow for thermal expansion and safe capping. Do not touch the bottle neck or inside with hands to avoid contamination.
- 6
Cap and seal
Immediately cap the bottle with a clean cap and press or screw tightly to form a secure seal. If using tamper-evident caps, apply according to product instructions.
- 7
Label & store
Apply a label if desired indicating the source (e.g., filtered tap, spring), bottling date, and any treatment (e.g., carbon-filtered). Store the bottled water upright in a cool, dark place away from chemicals, strong odors, and direct sunlight. For best quality, consume within 12–24 months for sealed bottled water, or follow local guidance.
