Method

Coffee Base

1

Grind beans

Measure 1 tablespoon (0.0625 cups) whole coffee beans (about 7–8 grams). Grind to a medium-coarse grind suited to your brewing method (drip or pour-over).

2

Heat water

Bring 8 fl oz of filtered water to a temperature between 195–205°F (about off-boil). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and rest 30 seconds.

3

Brew coffee

Brew the ground coffee using your preferred method (drip brewer, pour-over, or AeroPress) with the 8 fl oz hot water. Aim for a 1:15 coffee:water ratio by weight — this quantity yields a pleasantly mellow cup. Total brew time for pour-over should be about 2:45–3:30 minutes; drip will vary by machine.

Mellowing Additions

4

Warm and combine dairy

While coffee brews, gently warm 2 fl oz whole milk and 0.5 fl oz heavy cream in a small saucepan or steam wand until about 140–150°F (hot but not boiling). This yields a smooth mouthfeel. If you prefer cold, skip warming and use cold milk for an iced or cold variant.

5

Sweeten

Stir 0.5 tablespoon vanilla syrup and 1 teaspoon light brown sugar into the warm milk mixture until dissolved. The combined sweetness and vanilla create the signature mellow joy flavor.

6

Combine coffee and dairy

Pour the freshly brewed 8 fl oz coffee into your serving cup. Slowly pour the warmed milk mixture into the coffee, stirring gently to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness to preference.

Finishing & Optional

7

Adjust body and mouthfeel (optional)

If the beverage feels too strong, add up to 0.5 fl oz cold water to slightly dilute without losing flavor. Add a pinch of fine sea salt to round bitterness if desired.

8

Garnish

Optionally dust the top with a small pinch of ground cinnamon for aroma and an extra mellow note.

9

Serve

Serve immediately while hot. For iced version: pour brewed coffee over ice, combine with chilled milk mixture, and serve with straw.
