Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare ingredients

Chill a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for a few minutes. If using egg white, separate one egg and reserve the white. Measure out spirits and other ingredients.

  2. 2

Dry shake (if using egg white)

In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz gin, 1/2 oz cherry liqueur, 1/2 oz elderflower liqueur, 1/2 tsp simple syrup, 2 drops rose water, the juice of 1/2 lemon (about 1/2 tablespoon) and the egg white. Seal and shake vigorously without ice for 20–30 seconds to emulsify and create foam.

  3. 3

    Wet shake

Add a generous scoop of ice to the shaker (or enough to fill about half the shaker). Shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.

  4. 4

    Strain

Double-strain the mixture into the chilled coupe or martini glass using a Hawthorne and fine mesh strainer to remove ice shards and ensure a smooth texture.

  5. 5

    If not using egg white

If you omitted the egg white, combine all liquid ingredients (including lemon juice and simple syrup) with ice in the shaker, shake 15–20 seconds, and strain into the chilled glass.

Garnish

  1. 6

Float a maraschino or brandied cherry on the surface of the cocktail. Gently place an edible cherry blossom or rose petal on the foam (if present) for visual effect. Optionally express a lemon twist over the drink and discard or place on the rim.
