Method
Bread Sticks Preparation
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, garlic powder, and dried Italian herbs.
Combine Ingredients
Once the yeast is activated, add it along with olive oil to the flour mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Shape the Sticks
After rising, punch down the dough, and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long stick shape.
Second Rise
Place the shaped breadsticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake the Bread Sticks
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. If using, sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the sticks during the last 5 minutes of baking.
Tomato Sauce Preparation
Simmer the Sauce
Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Garnish and Serve
Once the sauce is thickened, remove from heat and garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Serve warm with the breadsticks.
