Method
Prepare produce
Wash and trim
Thoroughly wash all produce under cold running water. Remove apple stem and core if using a blender (not required for juice extractor). Peel the orange and separate into segments. Trim carrot ends and peel if the skin is waxed. Trim cucumber ends; peel only if not organic or if you prefer milder flavor. Remove large hard stems from kale; keep spinach stems if small.
Prepare ginger and citrus
Peel a 1/2-inch piece of ginger and slice it into thinner pieces to make processing easier. Cut the lemon or lime in half and set aside for juicing at the end.
Juicing (centrifugal masticating or blender + strain)
If using a juicer (preferred for clear fresh juices)
Feed the firm produce in this order for best extraction: leafy greens, cucumber, apple (cut into pieces if needed), carrot, orange segments, ginger. Alternate soft and firm items to help push through greens. Collect juice in a pitcher. Stir in juice from the lemon or lime. Taste and add honey/agave if more sweetness is desired. Add 1–2 ice cubes to chill before serving.
If using a high-speed blender (for smoothies or green juice requiring straining)
Combine chopped apple, orange segments (pith removed if bitter), chopped carrot, cucumber, packed leafy greens, sliced ginger, and up to 1/4 cup cold water or coconut water in the blender. Blend on high until completely smooth (about 30–60 seconds). Place a fine mesh strainer over a pitcher or use a nut milk bag and pour the blended mixture through, pressing or squeezing to extract as much liquid as possible. Stir in lemon or lime juice and honey/agave if desired. Add ice before serving.
Adjust and finish
Taste the juice and adjust balance: add more citrus for brightness, a small pinch of salt to lift flavors, or a teaspoon of sweetener if overly tart. If the juice is too intense, dilute with up to 1/4 cup cold water or coconut water and stir. Add mint or basil leaves directly to the cup or bruise them lightly and stir into the pitcher for a fresh herbal note.
Serve immediately over ice for the best flavor and highest nutrient retention. If storing, pour into an airtight glass bottle and keep refrigerated; consume within 24–48 hours for best freshness (shake before serving as separation may occur).
