Method
Cocktail
- 1
Mix the cocktail
In a cocktail shaker or mixing glass, add 2 oz vodka, 3 oz Clamato juice, 0.5 oz fresh lime juice, 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce, 2 dashes hot sauce, 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper, and 1 tsp celery salt. Fill the shaker or mixing glass with ice and stir gently for 15–20 seconds to chill and slightly dilute. Stirring keeps the Clamato texture smooth; do not vigorously shake.
- 2
Adjust seasoning
Taste the mixture and adjust seasoning to preference: add additional hot sauce for spice, a dash more Worcestershire for umami, or up to 0.25 oz more lime juice for brightness. If it tastes too strong, add up to 0.5 oz more Clamato.
Rim & Garnish
- 3
Prepare the rim
On a small plate combine 1 tbsp coarse celery salt and 0.5 tsp coarse ground black pepper and mix. Run the cut side of 1 lime wedge around the rim of a tall highball glass. Dip the moistened rim into the celery salt/pepper mixture and twist to coat evenly; tap off any loose grains.
- 4
Assemble the drink
Fill the rimmed glass with large ice cubes (about 1 cup). Strain the chilled cocktail mixture into the prepared glass over ice. Garnish with 1 celery stalk and 1 lime wheel or wedge on the rim. Optionally add a small shrimp, pickled bean, or bacon strip for a heartier garnish if desired.
- 5
Serve
Serve immediately with a straw. Encourage the drinker to stir lightly before sipping to incorporate flavors that settle. Note: to make multiple servings, scale ingredients linearly (e.g., for 4 drinks multiply each ingredient by 4).
