For the milk

Method

White milk (served cold or warm)

  1. 1

    Cold milk (plain)

Pour 2 cups of whole milk into a clean glass. If you want it chilled, add 2–4 ice cubes. Stir briefly and serve immediately.

  2. 2

    Warm milk (plain)

Pour 2 cups of whole milk into a small saucepan. Warm over low to medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until steam rises and the milk is hot but not boiling (about 4–6 minutes). Remove from heat and pour into a mug. If desired, sweeten with up to 1 teaspoon sugar or sweetener and stir to dissolve.

Chocolate milk

  1. 3

    Using chocolate milk powder

Place 2 tablespoons chocolate milk powder into a serving glass. Add 2 cups of cold whole milk. Stir vigorously with a spoon or whisk for 20–30 seconds until powder is fully dissolved and the milk is uniform in color. Taste and add up to 1 teaspoon sugar if you want it sweeter. Add 2–4 ice cubes if desired and serve.

  2. 4

    Using chocolate syrup (concentrated)

Put 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup into the bottom of a glass. If the syrup is very thick, stir in 2 teaspoons cold water to loosen. Pour 2 cups cold whole milk over the syrup; stir vigorously until syrup is fully incorporated. Add ice if you like and serve.

  3. 5

    Warm chocolate milk

In a small saucepan, gently combine 2 cups whole milk and 2 tablespoons chocolate powder or syrup. Warm over low heat, whisking frequently, until hot but not boiling (about 4–6 minutes) and the chocolate is fully dissolved. Pour into a mug, top with whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa or chocolate shavings if desired.

Garnish and adjustments

  1. 6

To adjust sweetness, add sugar or your preferred sweetener a little at a time and stir until dissolved. For creamier texture, use whole milk or add a tablespoon of heavy cream. For lower-fat options, substitute with 2% or skim milk; note that texture and flavor will be lighter.
