Coffee base

Method

Coffee base

1

Brew two shots (about 60 ml) of very strong espresso using an espresso machine, Moka pot, or Aeropress. If your espresso method yields concentrated liquid, aim for about 50–60 ml total.

2

Pour 30 ml hot water into a pre-warmed serving glass or cup to temper and slightly lengthen the espresso. Immediately add the brewed espresso to the cup and stir gently to combine. Set aside in a warm place while you prepare the cream.

Sweetened cream

3

Chill equipment

Place a medium mixing bowl and the whisk attachment (or beaters) in the refrigerator for 10 minutes. Cold equipment helps the cream whip more quickly and hold texture.

4

Pour 1 cup of heavy cream into the chilled bowl. Add 2 teaspoons granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and a pinch of fine sea salt.

5

Using an electric hand mixer or a stand mixer on medium speed, whip the cream until soft to medium peaks form. Soft peaks: cream holds shape but tips fold; medium peaks: holds shape firmly but still slightly soft. This should take 2–4 minutes depending on speed. Do not overwhip—stop as soon as the cream is smooth and billowy.

6

Taste the whipped cream and adjust sweetness or vanilla if desired. Keep the cream chilled until ready to assemble.

Assembly & garnish

7

Give the coffee base a gentle stir. Spoon or pipe a generous dollop (about 2–3 tablespoons) of the sweetened whipped cream on top of the hot espresso. The cream will float briefly and then slowly sink to create a layered effect and creamy mouthfeel.

8

Lightly dust the top with a teaspoon of cocoa powder or finely grated chocolate. Optionally, garnish with 2–3 whole espresso beans for presentation.

9

Serve immediately while the espresso is hot and the cream is cold. To drink, either sip through the cream for a rich, velvety first taste or stir the cream into the espresso for a uniformly creamy beverage.
