Pour the Tajín and optional coarse salt onto a small plate and mix evenly. Run the lime wedge around the rim of a highball or Collins glass to moisten it. Press the glass rim into the Tajín mixture, turning to coat evenly. Set the glass aside.

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add 2 oz mezcal, 2 oz fresh grapefruit juice, 0.5 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.5 oz agave syrup.

Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for about 10–15 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and ingredients are well combined and slightly frothy.

Fill the Tajín-rimmed glass with fresh ice (large cubes if available). Strain the shaken mixture into the prepared glass over the ice.

Gently top the cocktail with about 2 oz (or to taste) club soda to add effervescence. Give the drink one gentle stir (about 1–2 turns) to integrate the soda without losing carbonation.

Garnish with a grapefruit wedge or a twist of grapefruit peel and optionally a small lime wedge. Serve immediately with a straw or without, encouraging guests to sip and enjoy the smoky-meets-citrus flavors.
