Brown Butter Rye
Method
Preparation
Brown the Butter
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the butter turns a golden brown color and has a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
Prepare Butternut Squash Simple Syrup
Peel and cube the butternut squash. In a small pot, combine the squash with equal parts water and sugar (1 cup each). Bring to a simmer and cook until the squash is soft. Blend until smooth and strain through a fine mesh to create a simple syrup. Let it cool.
Combine Ingredients
In a mixing glass, combine the brown butter (cooled), rye whiskey, butternut squash simple syrup, and old-fashioned bitters. Stir well to combine.
Serving
Serve
Strain the mixture into a chilled old-fashioned glass filled with ice. Garnish with a twist of orange peel and serve immediately.
