Flan and Caramel Topping

Method

Preparation Steps

1

Make the Caramel

In a saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water. Heat over medium heat, stirring gently until the sugar dissolves. Allow it to boil without stirring until it turns a deep amber color. Remove from heat and quickly pour the caramel into a round flan mold, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.

2

Prepare the Flan Mixture

In a blender, combine the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Blend until smooth and well combined.

3

Bake the Flan

Pour the flan mixture over the cooled caramel in the mold. Place the mold in a larger baking dish filled with hot water (bain-marie). Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 50-60 minutes, or until set (a knife should come out clean).

4

Cool and Chill

Remove the flan from the water bath and let it cool at room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

5

Make the Whipped Cream

In a mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream and powdered sugar until soft peaks form.

6

Serve

To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan and invert onto a serving platter. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of salt.
