Method
Prepare Infusion
Warm infusion
In a small saucepan combine 2 cups filtered water, sliced ginger, 6 mint leaves, and 4 basil leaves. Warm gently over low heat until just steaming (do not boil) for 5 minutes to release aromatics, then remove from heat and let steep, covered, for 10 minutes. Strain the infusion into a heatproof bowl, pressing on solids to extract liquid, and discard solids.
While the infusion steeps, zest one lime or orange if you want extra aroma (optional). Reserve zest for finishing.
Combine Base
In a large pitcher, pour 6 cups cold water. Add the warm, strained ginger-mint-basil infusion and stir to combine. This yields a subtly aromatic base without making the drink hot.
Add 1 cup fresh lime juice and 1 cup fresh orange juice to the pitcher. Stir thoroughly to integrate juices with the water base.
Sweeten & Season
Stir in 3 tablespoons agave syrup (or honey) until completely dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness: add up to 1 tablespoon more if you prefer sweeter.
Add 1 teaspoon sea salt and stir well — the salt brightens citrus flavors and balances sweetness.
Add Fruit, Herbs & Chill
Add the thin lime and orange slices, thin cucumber slices, remaining mint leaves (reserve 6 sprigs for garnish), remaining basil leaves, and edible flower petals (if using) to the pitcher. Gently muddle one or two pieces of the cucumber and a couple of mint leaves with the back of a wooden spoon against the pitcher wall to release a hint of flavor, but do not pulverize.
Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to 4 hours to allow flavors to marry. The longer it chills, the more pronounced the infusion.
Serve
Serve immediately. Leftover Agua De Vida will keep refrigerated, covered, for up to 48 hours; remove herbs and cucumber after 24 hours to prevent bitterness.
