Coffee

Equipment & garnish

Method

Coffee

  1. 1

    Brew coffee

Brew 2 shots of espresso (about 2 oz) or make 8 oz of very strong drip coffee. If you used espresso and want a slightly larger cup, add about 1 oz hot water to reach ~3 oz coffee volume.

  2. 2

Pour the brewed coffee into a warmed 10–12 oz mug. Warming the mug helps keep the drink hot longer.

Milk

  1. 3

    Heat and sweeten

In a small saucepan or milk pitcher, combine 6 oz whole milk with 1 tsp granulated sugar and 1 tsp vanilla extract. Heat gently over medium-low heat, stirring, until the milk is steaming and the sugar dissolves. Do not boil (target ~150°F / 65°C).

  2. 4

    Froth (optional)

If you like a textured top, froth about 1 oz of the heated milk using a milk frother or steam wand until you have microfoam. Reserve the foam for topping.

  3. 5

If you prefer no foam, simply keep the milk smooth and hot for pouring.

Assemble & garnish

  1. 6

Slowly pour the heated milk into the mug with brewed coffee, holding back the foam with a spoon. Aim for a milk-to-coffee ratio of roughly 1.5:1 (6 oz milk to ~4 oz coffee) so the drink is creamy and 'white' in color.

  2. 7

Spoon the reserved milk foam on top (about 1 oz) if using. Lightly dust with 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon if desired.

  3. 8

Taste and adjust sweetness: add a little more sugar or vanilla if desired. Serve immediately.
