Classic Mimosa

Method

Classic Mimosa

  1. 1

    chill

Make sure your sparkling wine and orange juice are well chilled (40–50°F / 4–10°C). Chilling prevents excessive foaming and preserves bubbles.

  2. 2

    prepare glass

Choose a flute or tulip glass. If you prefer a sugared rim, rub a fresh orange wedge around the rim and dip the rim into a shallow plate of sugar (or citrus salt). Otherwise, leave the rim clean.

  3. 3

    measure

For one serving, measure 1/2 cup (120 ml) chilled sparkling wine and 1/2 cup (120 ml) fresh orange juice. The classic ratio is 1:1, but you can adjust to taste (more wine for dryer, more juice for sweeter).

  4. 4

    pour

Pour the orange juice into the chilled flute first, filling it about halfway. Pour the sparkling wine slowly down the side of the glass (or over the back of a spoon) to minimize foam and preserve carbonation.

  5. 5

    finish

If desired, add 1 teaspoon of simple syrup or 1 teaspoon of orange liqueur to taste and gently stir once with a long bar spoon. Garnish with an orange slice or twist on the rim.

  6. 6

    serve

Serve immediately while effervescent. One classic mimosa serves one person.

Variations & Garnishes (optional)

  1. 7

    pink mimosa

Replace 1/4 to 1/2 of the orange juice with fresh grapefruit juice for a pink-hued, slightly tart variation. Proceed with same pour method.

  2. 8

    tropical mimosa

Replace 1/4 to 1/2 of the orange juice with pineapple juice for a sweeter, tropical note. Proceed with same pour method.

  3. 9

    fruit garnish

For added flair, drop a maraschino cherry or a halved strawberry into the glass before pouring the sparkling wine so it gently rises and looks decorative.

  4. 10

    batch mimosas (serves multiple)

For larger parties, keep a 1:1 ratio of sparkling wine to juice. Combine chilled juice in a pitcher and keep chilled. Just before serving, top individual glasses or a punch bowl with chilled sparkling wine to preserve bubbles. Pour wine slowly to prevent excessive foam.
