Method
Cocktail
- 1
Chill and prepare
Place an old-fashioned glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with large ice to chill while you prepare the cocktail. If using a large ice cube or sphere, have it ready.
- 2
Mix
In a mixing glass combine 2 oz Koval Single Barrel Rye, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Add plenty of ice to the mixing glass.
- 3
Stir
Stir the mixture briskly for about 30 seconds (15–30 rotations) until well chilled and slightly diluted — the glass should become frosty and the liquid should be cold to the touch.
- 4
Strain
Discard chilling ice from the serving glass if used. Place one large ice cube or sphere in the chilled old-fashioned glass. Strain the stirred cocktail over the large ice cube using a julep or hawthorne strainer.
- 5
Express and garnish
Take the orange peel and hold it over the drink, pith side up. Give it a firm twist to express oils over the surface, then rub the rim of the glass with the peel and drop it into the drink. Add a Luxardo or brandied cherry on a pick alongside the peel. If desired, add a tiny dash of smoked or aromatic bitters on the surface for extra aroma.
- 6
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the rye's spice, the bitters' warmth, and the orange oil's brightness.
