Whiskey & Garnish

Optional Simple Syrup for Sweetened Old Fashioned Variation

Method

Whiskey & Garnish

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Select a rocks glass (old fashioned glass). If using an old-fashioned style presentation, place one large ice cube or sphere into the glass.

  2. 2

    Measure whiskey

Pour 2 oz of Evan Williams Single Barrel over the large ice cube in the glass.

  3. 3

    Express orange oils

Hold an orange peel about 2–3 inches above the glass, skin side down. Give the peel a quick, strong twist to express the citrus oils over the surface of the whiskey. Rub the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop it into the drink (or discard if you prefer only the expressed oil).

  4. 4

    Garnish

If desired, add 1 Luxardo or maraschino cherry on a pick and rest it on the ice or drop it into the glass.

  5. 5

    Serve

Serve immediately, sipping slowly to appreciate the barrel-forward, caramel, vanilla and toasted oak notes of the whiskey.

Optional Sweetened Old Fashioned Variation

  1. 6

    Sweeten

If you prefer a slightly sweetened Old Fashioned: in the rocks glass, add 0.25 oz simple syrup and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters. Stir briefly to combine with the syrup.

  2. 7

    Add whiskey and ice

Add 2 oz Evan Williams Single Barrel and one large ice cube. Stir gently for 15–20 seconds to chill and dilute slightly.

  3. 8

    Finish

Express an orange peel over the glass, rub the rim, and drop it in. Add a cherry if desired and serve.
