Equipment
Method
Brewing - Regular Coffee
Measure coffee
Weigh or measure 2 tablespoons (about 10–12 g) of regular coffee grounds for one 8 oz cup. If using whole beans, measure approximately 0.0375 cups (~10–12 g) of beans.
Grind (if using whole beans)
Grind beans to a medium grind for drip or pour-over, or a coarser grind for French press. Aim for consistency similar to granulated sugar (medium) or coarse breadcrumbs (French press).
Heat water
Bring filtered water to a temperature of 195–205°F (90–96°C). For an 8 oz cup, use 8 fl oz (240 ml) of water.
Prepare brewer
If using a paper filter, rinse it with hot water and discard the rinse water. Place grounds in the filter or French press.
Bloom (pour-over/French press)
Pour about 30–40 ml of hot water evenly over the grounds to saturate them and let bloom for 30–45 seconds to release trapped CO2. For drip machines, this is handled automatically.
Brew
Continue pouring in slow, concentric circles until you reach 240 ml total (including bloom water) for pour-over. For French press, pour full amount, steep for 3:30–4:00 minutes then plunge slowly. For drip machine, start brewing and let the cycle finish.
Brewing - Decaffeinated Coffee
Measure decaf coffee
Measure 2 tablespoons (about 10–12 g) of decaffeinated coffee grounds for one 8 oz cup. If using whole decaf beans, measure approximately 0.0375 cups (~10–12 g).
Grind (if using whole beans)
Grind decaf beans to the same grind size appropriate for your brewer: medium for drip/pour-over, coarse for French press.
Heat water
Heat filtered water to 195–205°F (90–96°C). Use 8 fl oz (240 ml) of water per cup.
Prepare brewer
Rinse paper filter with hot water if used and discard rinse water. Add decaf grounds to the filter or French press.
Bloom (pour-over/French press)
Pour 30–40 ml of hot water evenly over the decaf grounds and let bloom for 30–45 seconds.
Brew
Finish pouring slowly until you reach 240 ml total for pour-over. For French press, steep 3:30–4:00 minutes then plunge. For drip machine, run a normal brewing cycle.
Serve
Pour decaf coffee into a warmed cup. Add sweetener or milk/creamer to taste (optional).
Notes & Tips
Coffee-to-water ratio: standard is about 1:16 (by weight) — ~10–12 g coffee to 240 ml water. Adjust to taste. Use freshly roasted beans within 2–4 weeks of roast for best flavor. Store beans in an airtight container away from heat and light. Clean equipment regularly to avoid stale oils. If preparing both decaf and regular for guests, brew in separate equipment or thoroughly rinse filters and carafes between brews to avoid cross-contamination of flavors.
