Pre-wash and prepare T-shirt

Wash and dry the T-shirt to remove sizing and prevent future shrinkage. Do not use fabric softener. Fold and lightly iron to remove major creases. Use a lint roller across the print area to remove dust and fibers.

Prepare design

Open the vector design file and mirror (horizontally flip) the artwork so the HTV will read correctly after pressing. Scale the design to fit the shirt front—typical adult chest print width: 9–11 inches (23–28 cm) for small/medium, up to 12 inches (30 cm) for large+—and position it relative to neckline using your design software's guides.

Place cutting mat in cutter or prepare printer. Load black HTV for the primary elements and white HTV for any highlights or layered elements. Ensure shiny side (carrier) faces down in cutter per manufacturer instructions.

Cut HTV

Cut the mirrored design from the black HTV first, using the recommended blade and pressure settings for your machine and material. If design uses white highlights or layering, cut those pieces from white HTV as separate cuts. Keep cuts organized and labeled if necessary.

Weed excess vinyl

Using a weeding hook, remove the background vinyl and any small interior pieces (the negative space) leaving only the design on the carrier sheet. Take care around thin details—work slowly and remove small bits with tweezers if needed.

Pre-press shirt

Set your iron to the cotton/linen setting (or set heat press to 305–320°F / 150–160°C). Pre-press the T-shirt for 3–5 seconds where the design will go to remove moisture and flatten seams. Place a Teflon sheet or parchment paper over the area after pre-pressing if your press runs hot.

Align the design

Using a ruler or T‑square, measure from the neckline or side seams to center the design on the shirt. Position the black HTV design shiny carrier side up on the shirt. If layering white highlights, align those pieces on top of the black base. Secure edges with a small piece of heat-resistant tape or masking tape so the pieces don't shift during pressing.

Press HTV to shirt

If using a heat press: cover the design with parchment paper/Teflon sheet and press at 305–320°F (150–160°C) for 10–15 seconds with medium pressure. If using an iron: use the highest dry cotton setting, place parchment/Teflon over the design, press firmly with maximum pressure for 25–30 seconds, applying even pressure and holding the iron in place (do not slide). Allow to cool for a few seconds but follow HTV manufacturer guidance for hot- or cold-peel; most layering/transfers recommend warm or hot peel—if your HTV is hot-peel, remove the carrier while warm; if cold-peel, wait until completely cooled.

Apply second layer (if applicable)

If you used separate white highlight pieces, place them after the base layer is fused (or they may be pressed simultaneously if the HTV supports it). Cover with parchment and press again at the same temperature for 8–12 seconds to fully adhere. Avoid over-pressing to prevent shine or melting.

After removing the carrier sheet per HTV instructions, give the entire design one last quick press (parchment between) for 2–4 seconds to ensure adhesion. Allow the shirt to cool fully flat before moving it to avoid stretching the design.

Inspect edges and re-press any lifting spots using parchment and gentle pressure. Remove any stray vinyl pieces with the weeding tool. For best durability, wait 24 hours before washing.

Care instructions: turn garment inside out, machine wash cold on gentle cycle, tumble dry low or hang dry. Do not use bleach or abrasive detergents; avoid ironing directly on the design.
