Method
Burgers (makes 1 box lunch)
- 1
Form patty
Divide the 8 oz ground beef into a single ball and gently form into a patty about 4.5–5 inches in diameter and roughly 3/4 inch thick at the center. Do not overwork the meat. Make a shallow dimple in the center with your thumb to reduce bulging while cooking.
- 2
Season
Season both sides of the patty evenly with 1/2 tsp kosher salt and 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper just before cooking.
- 3
Cook
Heat a griddle or heavy skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Add 1 tsp vegetable oil and swirl. Place the patty on the hot surface and cook undisturbed for 3–4 minutes until a brown crust forms. Flip and cook another 3 minutes for medium doneness (adjust ±1 minute for preferred doneness). During the last 30–45 seconds of cooking, place 1 slice of American cheese on the patty and cover the pan briefly to melt.

Assemble burger
On the bottom bun, layer the iceberg lettuce leaf, then the cheese-topped patty. Top with 2 slices of tomato and 3 dill pickle slices. Spread 1 tsp ketchup on the top bun and 1 tsp yellow mustard (and 1 tsp mayonnaise if desired) on the inside of the top bun, then place it on the burger.
- 6
Wrap for box
Place the assembled burger on a parchment square and loosely wrap to keep it warm and prevent moisture buildup. Let rest in the wrap for 1–2 minutes before packing.
Boxing & Serving
- 7
Place the wrapped burger into the box lunch container or clamshell with the seam side down. Add the single-serve Zapp's potato chips beside the burger. Tuck any extra condiments or napkins in the box. Close the container and label with contents if required.
- 8
Serve immediately for best quality. Estimated holding time in an insulated delivery bag is 20–30 minutes; include a small ice pack for extended transport if needed.
