1

Prepare glass

If you want a salted rim, run a lime wedge around the outer rim of a chilled rocks or coupe glass. Spread the coarse salt on a small plate and dip the moistened rim into the salt to coat. Set the glass aside.

2

Juice lime

Roll a fresh lime on the countertop firmly to release juices, then cut and squeeze to yield 0.75 oz (about 22 ml) fresh lime juice. Strain if desired to remove pulp and seeds.

3

Build and shake

Add 2 oz tequila, 1 oz Cointreau, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.5 oz agave syrup into a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with 6 ice cubes (enough to come near the top). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the exterior of the shaker is frosty and well-chilled.

4

Strain and serve

Double-strain (using a Hawthorne and fine mesh if available) into the prepared glass over fresh ice if serving on the rocks, or into the chilled glass without ice for a neat coupe-style margarita.

5

Garnish

Finish with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim. Adjust sweetness with a few drops more agave syrup if needed. Serve immediately.
