Dough

Spiced Powdered Sugar

Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until well combined.

  2. 2

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, beat the eggs and then add the milk and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.

  3. 3

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

  4. 4

    Heat Oil

In a deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C) over medium-high heat.

Frying Zeppole

  1. 5

    Fry the Dough

Using a spoon or a small ice cream scoop, drop spoonfuls of the dough into the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pan.

  2. 6

    Cook Until Golden

Fry the zeppole for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.

Warm Apple Butter Preparation

  1. 7

    Cook Apples

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the apple cider, diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil.

  2. 8

    Simmer and Blend

Reduce heat and let simmer for about 30 minutes until the apples are soft. Use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until smooth.

Spiced Powdered Sugar Preparation

  1. 9

    Mix Spiced Sugar

In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well and set aside.

Serving

  1. 10

    Serve Warm

Dust the warm zeppole with the spiced powdered sugar and serve with a side of warm apple butter for dipping.
