Toppings
Method
Pasta Preparation
- 1
Boil the Spaghetti
Fill a large pot with water, add 1 tablespoon of salt, and bring it to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.
- 2
Drain and Set Aside
Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside. Reserve a cup of pasta water for later use.
Bolognese Sauce Preparation
- 3
Sauté the Vegetables
In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- 4
Cook the Ground Beef
Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- 5
Add Tomatoes and Seasoning
Stir in the crushed canned tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine, oregano, 1 teaspoon of salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- 6
Simmer the Sauce
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a bit of reserved pasta water.
- 7
Finish with Fresh Basil
Once the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded, stir in the chopped fresh basil and remove from heat.
Assembly
- 8
Combine Spaghetti and Sauce
In the skillet with the Bolognese sauce, add the drained spaghetti. Toss to coat the spaghetti evenly with the sauce. If needed, add more reserved pasta water to reach desired consistency.
- 9
Serve
Divide the spaghetti Bolognese among serving plates. Top with grated Parmesan-Reggiano cheese and additional fresh basil if desired.
