If the 2023 Gamay is not already slightly cool, place the bottle in the refrigerator for 30–60 minutes. Gamay is best served lightly chilled (about 12–14°C / 54–57°F). Wipe the bottle neck with a clean towel, then use the wine opener to remove the cork carefully.

Chill and open

Pour about 50 ml (a small taste) into the glass to inspect color and clarity. Swirl gently and bring the glass to your nose. Note fresh red-fruit aromas (cherry, raspberry), floral notes, and any subtle earth or spice typical of Gamay from France.

Inspect and smell

If the wine is young and you want it to open up more quickly, decant the bottle into a decanter for 10–20 minutes. Alternatively, pour the bottle straight into glasses for maximum fruit expression. If the wine tastes closed or too tannic, add a small splash (about 30 ml) of cold water to the decanter and swirl to integrate—this is an optional technique to soften very young wines.

Pour 120–150 ml into each tulip glass, filling to the widest part to allow aromas to concentrate. If you prefer a slightly cooler profile, add 1–2 ice cubes to a carafe (not directly in the glass) and decant briefly, or chill the bottle slightly longer before pouring.

Serve

Taste in three stages: initial entry (observe acidity and fruit), mid-palate (texture, body, tannin presence), and finish (length and aftertaste). Look for bright red-fruit flavors (cherry, cranberry), lively acidity, and a light-to-medium body typical of a 2023 Gamay from France.

Pair the wine with the suggested accompaniments: soft-ripened cheese and charcuterie enhance the wine's fruit and balance any earthiness; crusty bread cleanses the palate between bites; fresh cherries or grapes mirror the wine's fruit character.

If serving to multiple guests, offer small pours and encourage discussion of aromas, flavors, and texture. Refill glasses as desired, keeping the wine slightly chilled throughout service.

If you have leftover wine, reseal the bottle with the original cork (or a wine stopper) and refrigerate upright. Consume within 2–3 days for best quality. For longer preservation (up to 5–7 days), consider using a vacuum wine preserver.
