Method
Cocktail
- 1
Chill glass
If you prefer a colder drink, place an old-fashioned glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.
- 2
Combine ingredients
Fill a mixing glass with plenty of ice. Add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.5 oz dry vermouth, 0.5 oz Campari, 0.25 oz orange liqueur, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.
- 3
Stir
Stir the mixture briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full strokes) until well-chilled and slightly diluted — the mixing glass should feel very cold to the touch.
- 4
Prepare glass and ice
If you chilled the glass with ice water, empty and dry it. Add 1–2 large ice cubes to the old-fashioned glass.
- 5
Strain
Using a fine strainer or the mixing glass strainer, strain the chilled cocktail over the large ice cubes in the prepared glass.
- 6
Express the orange peel
Hold the orange peel skin-side down over the drink and firmly squeeze to express the oils across the surface, then run the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink.
- 7
Garnish
Optionally add a Luxardo cherry on a pick. Serve immediately.
Notes
- 8
Adjust sweetness by varying the simple syrup between 0 and 0.5 oz. Substitute bourbon for rye if you prefer a softer, sweeter backbone.

This recipe yields one cocktail. For a round of four, multiply ingredient quantities by four and stir in a larger mixing vessel with plenty of ice.
