Method

Preparation

1

Heat Water

Heat fresh water to just off boiling (about 88–95°C / 190–203°F). If you don’t have a thermometer, bring to a boil then let rest 20–30 seconds.

2

Grind Beans

Use freshly roasted espresso beans and grind to a fine espresso grind. For one double shot Americano use about 18–20 g (approximately 0.036 cups) of whole beans before grinding.

3

Pull Espresso

Tamp the ground coffee evenly into the portafilter and pull a double shot of espresso (about 60 ml / 2 fl oz). Aim for a 25–30 second extraction. If you don’t have an espresso machine, brew a very strong concentrated coffee using a Moka pot or AeroPress (use the espresso grind and about half the usual water).

4

Combine

Pour about 240–300 ml (0.33 cups listed is approx 80 ml; total cup size can be adjusted) of hot water into a serving cup first (traditional 'Americano' is hot water then espresso added). Gently add the freshly pulled espresso on top of the hot water. This preserves crema and gives a balanced flavor.

5

Adjust

Taste and adjust. Add milk or cream (about 2 tbsp) and sugar (about 1 tsp) to taste if desired. Stir gently to combine.

6

Iced Option

For an iced Americano, fill a tall glass with 1 cup of ice. Pour 60 ml (2 fl oz) of espresso over the ice, then top with cold water to taste (typically 120–180 ml). Stir and add sweetener or milk if desired.
