Method

Prepare the Patties

  1. 1

    Form the Patties

In a mixing bowl, gently combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Divide the mixture into two equal portions and form into loose balls. Do not overwork the meat.

  2. 2

    Flatten the Patties

Preheat a cast iron skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Once hot, take one meatball and place it on the skillet. Use a spatula to smash the ball down into a flat patty about 1/2 inch thick. Repeat with the second ball.

Cook the Patties

  1. 3

    Sear the Patties

Cook the smashed patties for 3-4 minutes without touching them until a crust forms. Flip the patties over carefully.

  2. 4

    Add Cheese

Immediately after flipping, place a slice of cheese on each patty. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the patties reach your desired doneness.

Assemble the Burger

  1. 5

    Toast the Buns

While the patties are cooking, slice the burger buns in half and toast them on the skillet until golden brown.

  2. 6

    Build the Burger

On the bottom half of each toasted bun, layer the lettuce, followed by the cooked patty with melted cheese, sliced tomato, pickles, ketchup, and mustard. Top with the other half of the bun.
