Method
Cocktail
- 1
Dissolve sugar and add bitters
Place the packed brown sugar in an Old Fashioned glass. Add the Angostura bitters directly onto the sugar. If the sugar is dry and won't dissolve, add up to 1/2 tsp club soda (or 1/4 oz simple syrup) to help dissolve. Using a muddler or the back of a bar spoon, mash and stir until the sugar is mostly dissolved and evenly moistened with bitters.

Add ice and final stir
Add a large ice cube or sphere to the glass. Stir gently for another 15–20 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the cocktail, aiming for a smooth, well-integrated texture.

If you prefer a sweeter and fully dissolved base, substitute the brown sugar with 1/4 oz simple syrup and skip the muddling step—add bitters to the syrup before adding bourbon and ice.

For a slightly brighter citrus note, flame the expressed orange peel briefly (optional) before dropping into the drink.
