Affogato Assembly

Method

Affogato Assembly

  1. 1

    Prepare espresso

Brew two fresh shots of hot espresso (about 60 ml total) using an espresso machine or Moka pot so the coffee is hot and aromatic. If you prefer a slightly sweeter drink, stir 1 tsp of espresso syrup or simple syrup into the hot espresso until dissolved.

  2. 2

    Pre-chill serving glasses (optional)

If desired, place the serving glasses or small dessert bowls in the freezer for 5–10 minutes before assembling to slow melting and keep the gelato colder longer.

  3. 3

    Scoop gelato

Place two generous scoops of vanilla gelato into each chilled serving glass or bowl. Use a warmed ice-cream scoop (dip in hot water and dry) for smooth, rounded scoops.

  4. 4

    Pour espresso

Immediately pour the two hot espresso shots directly over the gelato. Pour slowly and evenly so the hot espresso cascades over the scoops and begins to melt them, creating a creamy coffee cream.

  5. 5

    Add garnishes

Sprinkle 1 tsp of dark chocolate shavings and 1 tbsp of toasted hazelnuts or chopped amaretti over the top if using. These add texture and complementary flavors.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve immediately with a small spoon. Enjoy while the espresso is hot and the gelato is still partially frozen so you get a contrast of temperatures and textures.
