Method
Cocktail
Chill glass
Place a chilled martini or coupe glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure it is very cold at service.
Brew espresso
Brew a strong 1 oz shot of espresso (or use very strong coffee). Let it sit for about 15–20 seconds so it is hot but not steaming; this helps create crema when shaken.
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 1 cup of ice, 1.5 oz vodka, 1 oz coffee liqueur, 0.5 oz simple syrup, and the hot 1 oz espresso. Adding hot espresso helps build a rich crema on top.
Dry shake (optional but recommended)
If you prefer more crema, first close the shaker and shake vigorously without ice for 8–10 seconds to emulsify the espresso and syrup with the alcohol. Then open and add ice.
Shake with ice
Seal the shaker and shake very vigorously with ice for 12–18 seconds until the outside of the shaker is frosty and the mixture is well aerated. This final shake chills and dilutes the drink while forming the signature foamy head.
Strain
Discard the ice from your chilled glass if used for chilling. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled martini or coupe glass using a Hawthorne and fine mesh strainer to remove any small ice chips and ensure a smooth texture.
Finish & garnish
If using, very gently float 0.25 oz extra espresso on top by pouring over the back of a spoon for an intense coffee aroma. Garnish with three coffee beans placed on the foam (representing health, wealth, and happiness). Optionally add an orange twist or a light dusting of cocoa powder for aroma.
