Method
Garlic Butter
- 1
Soften and combine
If butter is refrigerated, let 0.5 cup unsalted butter sit at room temperature until soft (about 20–30 minutes) or gently microwave in 5–7 second bursts until spreadable but not melted.
- 2
Make garlic butter
In a medium bowl, combine softened butter, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 4 finely minced garlic cloves, 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan (if using), 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest (optional). Mix thoroughly until evenly combined and creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning.
Bread
- 3
Preheat oven
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Position a rack in the middle of the oven. For a crispier underside you can preheat a baking sheet as well.
- 4
Prepare loaf
Using a serrated knife, slice the baguette in half lengthwise. If you prefer slices, cut the loaf into 1–1.5 inch thick diagonal slices without cutting all the way through (so slices remain connected) or fully slice for individual pieces.

- 6
Wrap or place on sheet
For softer garlic bread, wrap the loaf halves loosely in aluminum foil. For crispier tops, place the buttered halves cut side up on a baking sheet without foil.
Bake & Finish
- 7
Bake
Bake in the preheated 400°F (200°C) oven for 10–12 minutes if wrapped (steaming yields soft interior), or 8–10 minutes unwrapped for a crisp top. If you want a golden, slightly charred surface, remove foil (if used) and broil on high for 1–2 minutes—watch carefully to avoid burning.
- 8
Garnish and serve
Remove from oven. Sprinkle with extra chopped parsley and additional grated Parmesan if desired. Let rest 1–2 minutes, then slice (if not pre-sliced) and serve warm.
