Prepare rim
Pour the smoked salt onto a small plate. Rub the outside rim (or inside rim if preferred) of a chilled rocks or coupe glass gently with a lime wedge to moisten, then dip the rim into the smoked salt to coat about half to three-quarters of the rim. Set the glass aside.
If using fresh guava
If you don't have prepared pink guava purée, blend 1 ripe pink guava (peeled and seeded) with 1/2 oz water until smooth, then strain through a fine mesh to yield approximately 1 oz purée. Chill before using.
Mixing
Add mezcal (2 oz), pink guava purée (1 oz), fresh lime juice (0.75 oz), agave syrup (0.5 oz), and orange liqueur if using (0.25 oz) into a cocktail shaker.
Fill the shaker with ice (about 6 ice cubes). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds, until the outside of the shaker is very cold and slightly frosted. This chills and slightly dilutes the drink for balance.
Serve
Double-strain the cocktail into the prepared glass over fresh ice if serving on the rocks, or without ice if serving straight up. Double-straining (using a fine mesh strainer along with the shaker strainer) removes any guava fiber for a smooth finish.
Garnish with a lime wheel and a thin slice of pink guava placed on the rim or floated on top. Optionally, express a lime twist over the drink to add a bright citrus aroma.
Taste and, if needed, adjust: add 0.25 oz more agave for sweetness or 0.25 oz more lime for brightness. Serve immediately.
