Cocktail
Saffron-infused Simple Syrup (makes ~4 fl oz)
Cardamom Tincture (makes ~2 fl oz) - optional shortcut: cardamom-infused vodka
Garnish & Finishing
Method
Saffron-infused Simple Syrup
In a small saucepan combine 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup sugar. Warm over low heat, stirring until sugar fully dissolves — do not boil.
Remove from heat, add saffron threads, cover, and steep 20–30 minutes. The syrup will take on a golden color and saffron aroma. Strain into a clean jar, refrigerate. Yields about 4 fl oz. Use 1/2 oz per cocktail; keep refrigerated up to 2 weeks.
Cardamom Tincture (quick infusion)
Crack cardamom pods lightly to expose seeds. Place pods in a small jar and add 2 oz vodka or high-proof spirit. Let infuse at room temperature for 1–4 hours for a mild tincture (longer for stronger). Strain out solids and reserve. Use 1/4 tsp per cocktail. Alternatively, pre-infused cardamom vodka may be used straight (reduce other vodka slightly if very strong).
Cocktail Assembly
Fill a mixing glass with the measured ice.
Add 2 oz vodka, 1/2 oz dry vermouth, 1/2 oz saffron-infused simple syrup, 1/4 tsp cardamom tincture, and 1/4 oz fresh lemon juice into the mixing glass.
Stir gently for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (aim for about 20% dilution by eye—cold glass, well-chilled spirit).
Discard ice water from the chilled serving glass (if used) and fine-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe/Nick & Nora.
Apple Wood Smoke Finish & Garnish
Prepare a smoke cloche or large glass lid if you have one. Place ~1 tablespoon apple wood chips on a heatproof surface (smoking pan or small metal dish). Ignite the chips with a torch until they smolder and produce smoke; alternatively, heat briefly on a hot pan until smoking.
Hold the smoke source under the cloche or invert the serving glass over the smoking chips to trap smoke. If using an inverted glass method: invert the chilled coupe over the smoldering chips for 5–10 seconds, then lift and immediately pour the cocktail into the smoked glass so smoke remains trapped briefly and aromas lift as you serve.
If you have a smoking gun, pipe a small burst of apple wood smoke into the serving glass and trap it for 10–15 seconds before seating the cocktail.
Garnish with a thin lemon wheel or express a lemon twist over the drink and drop it in. Float 2–3 saffron threads on the surface for aroma and visual contrast.
Serve immediately so the guest receives the smoky aroma along with saffron-cardamom notes.
